The Carbon Trust - ANGLE Low-Carbon Incubator

The WIsH Project

The Carbon Trust – ANGLE Incubator provides funded Management services to help early-stage businesses developing or exploiting low-carbon technology.  Businesses and projects accepted into the programme receive services funded by the Carbon Trust and delivered by experienced consultants and advisors from ANGLE and trusted partners.

Applicants need a good business proposition with a new technology or business model which could substantially and economically reduce carbon emissions compared to alternatives.

Applicants may be start-ups or spin-outs from academic & research institutes, private business and corporate communities.  The monthly selection process is competitive and has entrance and exit criteria covering the Team, Technology, Market Potential, Finances, and Carbon Case.  Priority is given to low-carbon technologies with demonstrable results but projects may still be working toward commercial prototypes.

ANGLE provides incubation services throughout the UK, undertaking business projects to help ventures achieve early commercial milestones and investment readiness.  Services are selected, prioritised and tailored to suit the circumstances of each venture.

Over the last two years ANGLE has worked with more than 19 low-carbon technology developers who went on to raise over £26M in private funding.  We draw on our experience in technology venture investment (ANGLE Ventures), and also designing and operating technology commercialisation support programmes on behalf of clients in the private and public sectors, including economic development agencies, research establishments and academic institutions (ANGLE Management).

Managed commercial innovation will underpin a profitable transition to a low carbon economy.  To find out more or discuss whether your low-carbon technology or service and business proposition could be eligible for incubation support please contact the ANGLE – Carbon Trust Incubator team on:

Low Carbon Technology – Areas of Interest

Low carbon and clean technology cover many different technological and service solutions.  Business propositions that show potential for significant future carbon savings based around developing and exploiting technologies in the following areas will be considered:

  • Development and exploitation of new energy sources
  • Energy generation and delivery technologies
  • Technologies that facilitate industrial processes with significantly lower carbon emissions
  • New technologies and materials that facilitate low-carbon product-service designs

Each project is considered on its merits but priority is given to technologies that fall within the Focus and Consider quadrants of the Carbon Trust’s Low Carbon Technology Assessment Grid. Further details are given in the brochure.

Business and economic benefits from low-carbon innovation

Innovative technological and design solutions that reduce (or remove) carbon emissions over the lifecycle of a product or service will reduce environmental risk, but can also lead to positive profit and security outcomes. For example:

  • Reducing costs: through efficient use of energy and transport, or re-designing products and processes to avoid creating unusable wastes with expensive or carbon emitting disposal problems
  • Lowering risk: by reducing reliance on fossil fuels, or designing products and processes to remove exposure to future regulatory tightening or increasing costs for carbon emissions and waste disposal
  • Improving operational efficiency: a low-carbon or clean-tech design objective within a profit framework can provide focus for competitive innovation in product and process design and marketing
  • Creating new market opportunities: by meeting growing demand from consumers, industry supply chains and public sector buyers for products with a “low-carbon footprint” and “re-usable materials”

Technological and product-service design innovation can be behind each of these outcomes and may be considered for Carbon Trust incubation if the carbon case is significant and provided the support can make a real difference.
